Okatie, SC

Okatie, South Carolina

Okatie is an unincorporated community near the bottom of South Carolina, split between Beaufort and Jasper counties, and located close to Hilton Head Island. A neighborly region, it takes its' name from the nearby Okatie River, an estuary of the Port Royal Sound. The area is part of what is known as the "Low Country," which includes a large portion of the South Carolina coast and boasts just under 13,000 people. Low Country refers to a certain lifestyle unique to the area, including the landscape, climate, and pace of living. Life here is meant to be enjoyed without rushing, and stopping to smell the flowers whenever possible. This is an old-fashioned life, invoking images of big front porches, rocking chairs, fishing charter boats, and of course, the Ambrosia of the Gods slash-southern delicacy that they call Sweet Tea.

There are many unincorporated areas in the southern part of South Carolina, and since the logging industry headed overseas, many of them have tourism as their main source of income. Because nearby Hilton Head Island is a major tourist attraction for the region, Okatie has become a hub for travelers and tourists looking for an affordable place to stay that isn't too far from the island.

Graves Farm offers horseback riding for a fun afternoon out, including hour-long guided tours of the grounds. They have seasonal events like a pumpkin patch, Farm Festival, and they even put on a Zombie Shoot Hayride around Halloween. For a different type of relaxation, Chechessee Creek Club is a beautiful golf course complete with a pro shop and fine dining. Several beautiful cottages are available for visitors who want to sink a few holes, spend their time on-site, and enjoy a stately view of the course.

Savannah, which is right next door, is another major tourist hub, and the historic district attracts visitors from around the country. Some restaurants have been featured on television, such as Treylor Park, with unique options like peanut butter and jelly chicken wings or cheeseburger tacos. Or for more standard fare, the area also has Jen's and Friends, The Lady and Sons, and The Rail Pub, whose incredible history includes time as a brothel, a boarding house, and more.

Other attractions in this very haunted area are ghost tours, escape rooms, and carriage rides. If you're brave enough to attempt communicating with the spirits without the help of a tour guide, there are numerous locations that locals swear they've felt unexplainable presences in. A few of those are the old Planters Mercantile, Carson Cottage, and the Patz House.

Okatie is also just a short drive from beautiful beaches. It's the perfect place for laid-back living, but close enough to fun that you don't have to go far to find it. Our neighborly community has plenty of places for people to lay their heads at night, but, unfortunately, pests consider these living spaces to be prime real estate for themselves. That's when residents of Okatie and the surrounding areas can get in touch with Bluffton Pest Management. For years we've been helping make our neighbors' commercial and residential properties bug-free. Contact us today so we can start kicking your creepy-crawlies to the curb as soon as possible.
